Kanye vs Drake: Two Rap Giants in Conflict

Two of the most influential rappers of the last decade are currently clashing online. We explain what happened in the last weeks in a timeline.

After both rappers announced their albums a long time ago - Certified Lover Boy was planned for January and Donda for the end of July - old cracks in the relationship have flared up again. After rumors of a falling out between the two have been circulating behind closed doors for some time, Drake shot a few lines against Kanye on Trippie Redd's new album in the song "Betrayal." The reaction was not long in coming: in a group chat, in which Drake was also a guest, he sent a picture of the joker, which included the warning "You will never recover".

To understand how it could have come to this, you have to know that the two have a complicated relationship that goes back to the last few years. If they worked together amicably for years otherwise, at some point there were several misunderstandings that escalated into an ever-growing dispute. One of the biggest disputes developed between Drake and Pusha T, close confidant and musician at Kanye's label Good Music.

After it was assumed at the beginning of the summer that the relationship between the two has improved again and there were even rumors about a joint song on Certified Lover Boy, the conflict flared up again. The reason for this drama was the rumor that Kanye wants to release his album at the same time as Drake. Exactly this "problem" led to a dispute between the two once before in 2018.

July 24: Kanye collaborator Consequence says they are "looking for Drake's release date."

What was first rumored, rapper Consequence then confirmed via Twitter, "We're looking for @Drake drop date. @THEREALSWIZZZ Line It Up!!! #DropYaLo.", were the lines that Drake perceived as an attack. Based on them, he spoke out on July 30 - almost certainly directed at Kanye - saying, "Certified Lover Boy on the way, and that's for anyone in the way."

August 5: Kanye adds lyrics to "Donda": ‘"Move out of the way of my release"

After Kanye gave a second listening party in Atlanta two weeks after his first one, the changes he made to Donda during those two weeks also came to light. These changes contained messages that can certainly be interpreted as an attack on Drake. If one was still relatively harmless ("I can give a dollar to every person on Earth, that's God's Plan."), Kanye was already more explicit in the second (Move out of the way of my release/ Tryna get me off my Qs and Ps/ Why can't losers never lose in peace? Ain't nobody 'round me losing sleep/ Better find God 'fore he find me.")

August 8: Members of Drake and Kanye's camps exchange words on IG: "See you outside."

That both rappers are signed to different brands makes the whole thing even more exciting. After photos of Drake's upcoming Nike release surfaced, Kanye's longtime partner Don C gloatingly commented on images of the sneaker with "Plan B." The reaction was prompt, of course: Chubbs, Drake's close confidant, wrote, complete with a middle-finger emoji, "See you outside."

August 21: Drake's lines on "Betrayal" beginning of escalation

Then, on August 21, events rolled over. The release of Trippie Redd's new album and the lines on the song "Betrayal" broke the camel's back. Drake rapped in the direction of Kanye: "All these fools I'm beefin' that I barely know/ Forty-five, forty-four (Burned out), let it go/ Ye ain't changin' shit for me, it's set in stone." The lines may be directed at Pusha T and Consequence at the same time, since like Kanye, the two are 44 years old.

August 21: Consequence responds to the lyrics of "Betrayal," "Respect my team. It's party time."

Of course, it didn't take long for a reaction from the other camp to follow. Via Twitter, Consequence gave vent to his displeasure: "Fuck a Betrayal. It's the Disrespect for me dawg. Wit Trippie Redd Shotgun. Respect My Team." His brief "It's Party Time" comment can certainly be taken as a sign that the last word in this conflict has not yet been spoken.

Aug. 21: Kanye threatens in group chat: you'll never recover

Shortly after Consequence spread his opinion on Twitter, Kanye stepped in, sharing a screenshot of the group described at the beginning. Kanye also added the following text to the image of the Joker: "This is what I live for. I've been f**ked by nerds like you my whole life. You will never recover. I promise you that." The whole thing is given additional explosiveness by Pusha T's joining the group. Additionally, there is speculation as to whether Virgil Abloh is another part of the group.

August 23: Kanye leaks Drake's home address

Who thinks that at some point a page with the provocations stops, is taught better by Kanye. Thus, the 44-year-old posted a screenshot on which Drake's address is supposed to be seen. The latter posted a video of himself shortly thereafter, in which he shows himself laughing from a car. This casual reaction can be interpreted as a response to Kanye's leak.

There are still no new answers to the latest developments in the dispute of the currently probably most powerful rappers in the world. But at the latest with the release of the respective albums we will probably learn something new. But one thing seems to be as certain as the L in the Nike SNEAKRS app: This feud is far from over.
